About Our Founders: David and Ava Salman
David-Salman-sm.jpg

For 29 years, David and Ava Salman supplied waterwise plants to gardeners across the country. They welcomed gardeners at their Santa Fe Greenhouses retail nursery and greenhouse starting in 1984, and reached an even wider audience through their award-winning High Country Gardens mail order catalog starting in 1993.  Combining David's plant and Ava's marketing expertise, the Salmans grew their business nationally.

In 2014, the Salmans opened their wholesale WATERWISE GARDENING at their growing facility in Santa Fe, where David continued to work as a plant supplier, breeder, and lecturer.

In 2022, David Salman passed away. In 2023 and beyond, the High Country Gardens team will continue to share the legacy of the Salmans and their innovations in waterwise gardening.

David Salman's horticulture legacy includes the introduction of more than 60 improved hybrid, Old World, and native plants offered by WATERWISE GARDENING and High Country Gardens.  Learn More About David

Agastache and Salvia
Particularly popular among David's plant introductions are a variety of cold-hardy agastache or "hummingbird mint" and salvia.  Two favorites, the tall spikes of deep rose-pink clusters of Agastache Ava and the raspberry-colored Raspberry Delight, supply pollinators throughout Santa Fe and the Southwest.

Hardy Perennials
From Santa Fe to South Africa, David sought hardy perennials that could survive the cold winters in western environments around Utah, Colorado, and New Mexico. These perennials have been available in limited quantities through
